About Chatham Garrison
Chatham is home to HQ Royal Engineers, The Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME), RE Museum and RE Corps Enterprises Limited (Sapper Shop).
RSME provides training in all engineering disciplines, which provide the unique range of skills that are fundamental to the Military Engineer as well as delivering Military working animals, handlers and maintainers. The RSME also provides training for other Arms and Services, Government Departments and many International countries.
Brompton Barracks is listed Grade II* and described as being ‘one of the largest and most impressive examples of military architecture in the country". Built in the early 19th century, it was designed by James Wyatt who also designed the large artillery barracks at Woolwich.
Although Chatham military dockyard has long been closed, its naval buildings remain as the focus for a flourishing tourist industry (
The Dockyard).
Chatham Garrison is situated in the centre of the Medway Towns, 20 minutes from London by train, 35 minutes away from France by Eurostar and is in the North West of Kent – The Garden of England. Within close proximity are the beautiful cities of Canterbury, Tonbridge Wells and Maidstone, the County Town.
Within the barracks there is a NAAFI Spar shop, internet café, WRVS, launderette, gym, squash courts and mess bars with facilities. Local amenities are ample, with leisure centres, shopping centres, cinemas and supermarkets all within minutes of the garrison. The garrison boasts a Scout group,(Beavers, Cubs, Scouts), Girl Guide Group,(Rainbows, Brownies, Guides), Martial Arts, Horse Riding for military personnel and family discounts, yoga, gym and Personal Development Centre.
